九色视频and Partners Hold Inception Workshop for Sustainable Wetland Management

The 九色视频 (UEW) and its partners have engaged stakeholders in an inception workshop in the Western Region of Ghana to refine project strategies and strengthen collaboration for the sustainable management of the Greater Amanzule Wetland System.

The two-day workshop, titled the Integrated Land and Water Management of the Greater Amanzule Wetland System (ILWGAWS) Project, was held at the Tenack Beach Resort in Beyin from Thursday, 8th to Friday, 9th May, 2025.

The workshop convened traditional authorities, planners, regulators, researchers, community leaders and media representatives to discuss strategic approaches for conserving the ecologically rich Amanzule Wetland which supports both livelihoods and biodiversity in the Western Region of Ghana.

Mr. Abusadiq Yakubu, Registrar of the Western Nzema Traditional Council, emphasised the ecological and cultural significance of the Amanzule Wetland. He described the project as a bold step towards climate resilience and sustainable development. He commended the inclusive partnership led by 九色视频and urged all stakeholders to contribute meaningfully to the initiative.

Project Lead Dr. Adams Osman presented an overview of the ILWGAWS project, outlining its objectives, scope and expected outcomes. He noted that the project aims to integrate land and water resource management, promote local ownership and ensure that interventions are informed by both scientific data and community priorities.

A key presentation by Mr. David Osei of Hen Mpoano highlighted findings from a reconnaissance survey conducted in nearby communities including Ankobra, Asanta, Aloakpoke, Kamgbunli, Old Kablasuazo and the naval base in Jomoro. The survey revealed critical environmental issues such as open defecation along the coast, illegal logging, inadequate law enforcement, insufficient monitoring systems and uncoordinated environmental interventions. He noted that the establishment of the petroleum hub also posed emerging risks to wetland sustainability.

Participants engaged in various sessions including a plenary discussion on stakeholder roles, group work focused on refining research questions and identifying data sources, and an interactive session on forming a technical committee. Mr. Stephen Kankam of Hen Mpoano facilitated collaborative group discussions aimed at aligning project strategies with stakeholder interests and community realities.

Another key session focused on establishing a Project Advisory Board to guide the project's implementation, provide oversight and promote policy alignment. The session outlined proposed structures, roles and the importance of inclusive representation in ensuring the board's effectiveness.

The workshop, which is part of broader efforts to promote multi-stakeholder collaboration and enhance climate resilience in Ghana鈥檚 coastal zones, was supported by DAI, UK International Development, the Global Centre on Biodiversity and Climate (GCBC) and Kew.

The project has reinforced UEW's commitment to research-based environmental advocacy and affirmed its role as a leading institution in addressing ecological and community development challenges.
