Abstract

Eguaboano is a low-income community where most people are poor and lack basic amenities due to neglect and limited opportunities. This study employs new outdoor game (Airbadminton) activities via education to promote well-being and social change among young people in Eguaboano. The mixed methods design focuses on analysing the views of participants who play Airbadminton and their parents. A comprehensive analysis of data reveals that most young people in this community risk becoming vulnerable to skin bleaching, teenage pregnancy, and excessive gambling due to non- participation in organised physical activity. Findings indicate improvement in participants’ well-being, health status, a reduction in school dropout and gambling activities, and a decline in truancy among others. Participants learned values (e.g. respect, cooperation, leadership) while their parents applauded the initiative and requested its continuation. The study offers valuable data for stakeholders including government, local authorities, sport federations, and NGOs to support young people in low-income communities for social change in Africa.
