The Vice-Chancellor, Rev. Fr. Prof. Anthony Afful-Broni has stated that the welfare of staff and students of the ɫƵ (UEW) is valuable to Management hence, the continuous provision, construction and upgrade of facilities.

He recounted some of the on-going projects on the campuses of the University to facilitate effective administrative and efficient academic work, particularly the construction of a 100-bed-state-of-the-art University hospital at Winneba to improve the delivery of health services. 

Additionally, contracts for construction of three lecture blocks on Winneba Campuses have been awarded and are expected to be completed by the end of November, 2019. Also, three lecture blocks currently at the evaluation stage are expected to be built at the North Campus.

Furthermore, work is expected to be completed on a lecture theatre complex at COLTEK and the old laboratories and workshops are being refurbished to augment the new workshops provided by the African Development Bank/Council for Technical and Vocational Education and Training (AfDB/COTVET) project.

The Vice-Chancellor made this known during the Matriculation ceremony for the 2018/2019 Fresh Sandwich Students held from Thursday, 22nd to Saturday, 24th August, 2019 at the Winneba, Kumasi and Asante Mampong Campuses of the University.  

 “Our libraries on all Campuses are well stocked with numerous resources such as books and online materials readily available for your study and sufficient reading materials to augment the notes you take at lectures and enough reference materials to enable you undertake your assignments. Together, our libraries provide several thousands of volumes and periodicals. We provide access to over 40,000 online journals, databases and catalogues that can be accessed from anywhere in the world,” the Vice-Chancellor said to the Matriculants.

Rev. Fr. Prof. Afful-Broni pointed out that ɫƵconstantly redesigns and realigns its sandwich programmes to match up with Ghana Education Service’s calendar and schedules in order to meet the needs of individuals who fall into the Sandwich category.

He assured the fresh sandwich students that ɫƵwould continually adopt more innovative ways to improve the quality of the teaching and learning processes, the environment and staff available to deliver on the promises of the University.

“The quality of staff at this University is the best you can find anywhere in the world. This is the only University in Ghana with 100 percent of its academic staff being professional educators. This has been made possible due to our mandatory postgraduate programme in teaching in higher education for all academic staff. Even before Government thought of making this a policy for Universities in Ghana, we were already practising it,” the Vice-Chancellor said.

He advised the Matriculants to be disciplined, focused and committed since the programme is packed, loaded and intensive.

“You are therefore, required individually to fashion out a plan so that you are not overtaken by events within the limited time for the programme. I would urge you to quickly adjust to the environment, take full responsibility for your learning and take advantage of the many opportunities available to you here,” Rev. Fr. Prof. Afful-Broni said.

The University received a total of 5,314 applications for the various sandwich programmes with 3,484 going for undergraduate programmes and 1,830 for postgraduate programmes. This number represents a 42% increase over the previous year’s applications received. The University offered admission to 4,542 applicants, an increase of 34% over the previous year. However, by the close of registration, 3,791ԳپԲ52% over the previous year had registered. 2,035 of registered students representing 54% are females while 1,756ԳپԲ46% are males.
