Abstract

This presentation aims to present Pentecostalism as providing an ambivalent moral leadership in the Ghanaian public space. It demonstrates the manner in which albeit a professed secular state, religion, law and politics intricately intertwine in the Ghanaian public space. Owing to the increasing growth of the pentecostal constituency, its actors have become pivotal moral leaders in the public domain, influencing certain issues of public interest including human rights and legislative enactments. The presentation will contend that given their influential role in the public space, some Pentecostal leaders have engaged in certain actions that challenge the promotion and protection of human rights standards as well as the legal enforcement of society. Drawing on the pentecostalist active support and advocacy for Ghana鈥檚 anti-LGBTQI+ Bill, the presentation will interrogate the ways in which Pentecostalism creates a tacit Christian nationalism by offering an alternative moral leadership in the public domain.聽聽聽
