Cet article examine le féminisme dans les œuvres de Ken Bugul vis-à-vis de son apparente acceptation de la polygamie. L'étude porte essentiellement sur la représentation de Yadaba, la narratrice-personnage dans Riwan ou le chemin de sable qui accepte de devenir la vingt-huitième épouse d'un vieux marabout après être retournée d'une vaine et douloureuse aventure en Europe. Suite à cet étrange mariage, certains critiques ont conclu que Bugul soutient la polygamie. La présente étude prouve que le choix d'une narratrice qui embrasse la polygamie quoiqu'antiféministe est dû à la répression des tendances personnelles que nous pouvons retracer dans la frustration sociale et émotionnelle de l'autrice et non un désir de soutenir la pratique. Notre analyse se fonde sur la théorie psychocritique de Sigmund Freud et de Charles Mauron. Cette théorie nous a permis d'explorer le rôle de l'inconscient dans le développement psychologique et émotionnel de l'autrice visible dans les œuvres cibles. Nos données sont fondées essentiellement sur Riwan ou le chemin de sable et De l'autre côté du regard. Cependant, d'autres publications académiques sont inclues dans notre discussion pour démontrer que l'intrusion de Bugul dans le mariage polygame est la manifestation d'une crise psychocritique, crise psychologique, refoulement psychologique due à ses vécus. Ainsi, son apparente attitude apologétique envers la polygamie n'est qu'une manifestation de son inconscient indépendant de son moi social.

Abstract

This paper examines feminism in Ken Bugul's works vis-à-vis her apparent acceptance of polygamy. The study focuses essentially on the portrayal of Yadaba, the narrator in Riwan ou le chemin de sable who accepted to become the twenty-eighth wife of an old marabout after she returned from her unsuccessful adventure in Europe. Following this strange marriage, some critics argued that Bugul endorses polygamy. This paper proves that the choice of a narrator who embraces polygamy, albeit anti-feminist, is due to repression of unsatisfied personal desires traceable to the writer's frustrations in her social and emotional life rather than a deliberate act of endorsing the practice. Our analysis is grounded on the Psychoanalytic Theory of Sigmund Freud and Charles Mauron. This theory enabled us to explore the role of the subconscious on the psychological and emotional state of the writer visible in the two works under study. Data was gathered principally from Riwan ou le chemin de sable and De l'autre côté du regard. Nevertheless, other academic publications were also included in our discussion to prove that the decision of Ken Bugul to intrude into a polygamous home is the manifestation her psychological depression as a result of personal experiences. Thus, her seemingly apologetic attitude towards polygamy is only a manifestation from her other self which is independent of her stance as a committed writer.
