The Department of Clothing and Textiles Education at the ¾ÅÉ«ÊÓƵ (UEW) has once again demonstrated its commitment to sustainability and innovation by showcasing impressive creative works during the Level 300 Apparel Design and Construction Exhibition and fashion runway show.

The event, held under the theme "Building a Resilient Fashion Environment through Creativity and Sustainability," showcased the department’s commitment to blending innovation, environmental consciousness and pedagogical excellence.

The programme began with a detailed exhibition where students displayed an impressive collection of sustainable garments, accessories, and household items created from repurposed materials.

Utilising leftover fabrics, discarded denim, zippers, pure water sachets and other forms of textile waste, the students showcased how sustainable fashion can promote eco-conscious living and environmental responsibility. The exhibition featured an impressive range of innovative products—including raincoats, umbrellas, picture frames, and everyday wear—crafted entirely from recycled materials. Each piece reflected months of in-depth research, strategic planning, and creative execution, underscoring the students' commitment to sustainability and design excellence.

Dr. Jacqueline Ogoe, Course Lecturer for CLT351, explained that the exhibition was an essential part of students’ preparation for teaching roles at the senior high school level.

"This platform allows our students to apply all the skills acquired from Level 100 through Level 300 practically and creatively. This year’s twist was integrating sustainable design principles into their creations. They not only produced self-garments but also textile products that are durable and environmentally friendly," she noted.

Following the exhibition, excitement peaked with a colourful fashion show, as students confidently walked the runway dressed in their self-designed apparel. Each modelled piece reflected a fusion of style, sustainability and cultural expression, impressing guests and faculty members alike. The fashion show served as a visual celebration of the creativity, technical skill and eco-consciousness cultivated among the students.

Prof. Samuel Kwesi Asiedu-Addo, Chairman of the event, lauded the students for their remarkable innovation and creativity. "I am overwhelmed by what I have seen. Turning sachet water and plastics into raincoats and umbrellas is extraordinary. It shows that our students are not only learning to teach but also to lead change through creativity and sustainability," he said.

Prof. Asiedu-Addo emphasised the need for greater investment in the Department of Clothing and Textiles Education, citing challenges such as limited equipment and facilities. He advocated for partnerships with companies whose waste materials were creatively reused, suggesting that such collaborations could further enhance students' projects while promoting environmental responsibility.
