Department of Geography Education Trains Stakeholders on GIS

The Department of Geography Education on Tuesday, 13th July, 2021, organised a Geographic Information Systems (GIS) training workshop for stakeholders from the corporate sector, public sector, civil society and specific staff in the University community.聽聽

The training, held at the GIS Laboratory at the Faculty of Social Sciences Education Block, Room 304, taught participants how to effectively use the GIS to fight against the Corona Virus Disease (COVID-19).

The one-day training workshop took participants through several thought-provoking topics with intensive practicals sessions.

In his welcome address, the Head of Department (HOD), Geography Education, Dr. Enoch Sam urged participants to endeavour to participate fully in all that the facilitators would teach, especially with the practical sessions.聽

鈥淲e expect that by the time you leave here, you will go home with something tangible, something that will be beneficial to what you are doing in your various organisations. Also, I want to inform you that at the end of the celebration, the Department will still come back to you to look at areas of mutual corporation and benefit,鈥 Dr. Sam remarked.聽聽

Presenting the keynote address, a Lecturer, Department of Geography, UEW, Dr. Adams Osman elaborated on the 鈥楪eospatial technology鈥. He said that the GIS is a tool that enables end-users to see space and analyse phenomenon which exists spatially.聽

鈥淎s geographers, we have done a lot in the fight against COVID-19. This is to highlight and show forth what we have done and what we can do. And we believe that once we have done it, we should be able to share with our friends who want to employ these tools in their work,鈥 he said.聽聽

Dr. Adams added that GIS is an important tool that has the potential to greatly improve the population because its spatial focus embraces the idea of interconnection and it can be used to fight against COVID-19.聽

The resource persons were a Geographer, College of Business and Economics-UJ, Dr. Raphael Atanga, a Lecturer, Geography Department, Mr. Prince Kwame Odame and an M.Phil in Geography Education Student, Mr. Sanda Mohammed.
